The Basic Principles of Start-Stop Technology
Start-stop systems automatically shut down and restart the engine to reduce the amount of time it’s idling, therefore cutting down on fuel consumption and emissions. The majority of manufacturers choose to fit VARTA® batteries in their start-stop vehicles rolling off the production line.
The battery is at the heart of the car. It powers everything – from the ignition to continuously operating vehicle electric systems and onboard entertainment systems. The battery ensures constant power for all other functionalties during the start-stop process. Those batteries have to do much more than just starting the car. That’s why the BATTERY is the HEART of your vehicle.
Today most new cars have start-stop functionalty, which is why we have created two innovative VARTA® batteries with start-stop capability: VARTA® Silver dynamic with AGM technology for advanced start-stop vehicles with regenerative braking, and Blue dynamic with EFB technology for conventional start-stop vehicles.
An advanced energy management system decouples the alternator during acceleration and under normal driving conditions. This means more of the engine’s power is available to the wheels. The alternator is only recoupled again when the battery’s state of charge falls below a predefined threshold.
Battery is being discharged and charged and must supply all electronic devices on its own.
When the vehicle comes to a stop, the start-stop system switches off the engine.
Even when discharged, the battery must still supply the starter motor generator with sufficient starting power to start the engine again.

EFB Technology for Cars
EFB batteries support applications that operate at a partial state of charge and don’t require the deep-cycling characteristics of an AGM battery. A polyfleece scrim material, added to the positive plate surface, makes this possible. This helps to stabilise the active material of the plates, which increases the endurance.

The unique VARTA® Promotive EFB is a specifically designed battery for high-performance commercial vehicles and is the state of the art in acid stratification and vibration resistance. It is the only product in the market with mixing elements, exclusively developed and patented by Clarios, formerly Johnson Controls Power Solutions. EFB technology ensures reliable performance for all highly demanding applications and is ideal for end-of-frame installation.
A unique mixing element inside reduces acid stratification and is an optimum solution for all deep discharge applications. It’s a mechanical system that uses vehicle inertial forces to aid the mixing of acid in flooded batteries.
Superior internal fixations with best-in-class hot melt: Very high vibration resistance and perfect fit for end-of-frame installation ensure highest product performance.
The unique Labyrinth Lid design provides 100% spill protection and very low water consumption.
High cycling ability is guaranteed by using PowerFrame® technology, improved positive paste and grid-to-mass adhesion. A polyfleece scrim material, added to the positive plate surface, sustainably improves cycle life performance.

EFB Technology Features
Scrim is an additional polyester element between plate and separator. The scrim holds the active material in place inside the plate and avoids the erosion of mass. The result: enhanced deep cycle resistance and superior charge acceptance.
The glued fleece helps the plates keep their proper position at all times and in every condition.
Acid Circulation (Mixing Element)
The acid circulator avoids acid stratification. It’s a construction element that uses the natural movement of the vehicle to keep the acid inside the battery in constant circulation. The acid density stays at homogenous levels, which enhances charge acceptance and extends the overall battery life.

The battery is at the heart of the car. It powers all of the electrical systems – and when it fails, none of these systems will work.
The window heating is absolutely essential during winter and consumes 120W.
Keep your eyes on the road. The windscreen wipers do a good job, but they consume between 80 and 150 watts.
Lights on – vehicle lights are essential for safety. Modern LED systems consume as little as 50W.
Stay warm! The heating makes use of the heat produced by the engine, but with an energy consumption of 1000W it’s still one of the major drains on the battery.
Nice and cozy! A seat warmer will typically consume 100–200 watts per seat.
When you turn the AC on, the energy mainly comes from the engine. However, on top of this it consumes another 500W of battery power.
Here comes the sun. But it takes 200W of battery power to fold back the roof.
The car’s window and door management system uses several electrical motors and takes up 150W of battery power.
A cigarette lighter may be used to charge your smartphone and takes up another 100W on average.
It takes 800W up to 3000W of battery power to start the engine of your car.
Uniform cooling, powerful engine performance. The radiator draws about 800W from the electrical system.
Engine Management System
Modern cars cannot meet today’s environmental standards and requirements without an engine management system. This uses up to 200W.
Headlamp Cleaning System
During operation, the cleaning system drains up to 100W from the battery.
Excessive heat can cause sulfation and corrosion inside your battery. You usually notice the problem (trouble with cold starts and poor charge acceptance) during cold weather.
A parked car uses up to 1% of the battery´s charge for standby functionality. In addition depending on the ambient temperature and the age of the battery, self-discharge can drain the battery within a few weeks.
Driving only short distances does not give your battery enough time to recharge. In winter, high-consumption accessories such as defrosters and heated seats make matters worse.
As your car ages, the performance of its battery declines due to corrosion and sulfation. The sulfate crystals that form can clog the pores of your battery’s plates, preventing proper charging.
